The EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis provides access to activities supporting employability prospects, financial capacity, and strengthening productive capacities of local organisations such as micro, small and medium enterprises. Through this priority sector, the EU Regional Trust Fund reaches more than almost 530,000 vulnerable refugees and local beneficiaries in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Armenia, and the Western Balkans.
Nesreen is 35 and with her family she fled Deraa, Syria and now lives in Taybe, Jordan. Thanks to a UN Women-led cash-for-work training, supported by the European Union via the EU Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, she learnt how to sew. Being able to work and to provide for the needs of her family has had an incredibly positive psychological impact on Nesreen and her family. Nader, 44, from Deraa, Syria, and Chaikha, 45, also from Syria are part of the cash-for-work component of a solid waste management project managed by a consortium of partners led by GIZ and supported by the European Union, via the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis. The aim of the project is to develop a more efficient solid waste management system and waste water treatment in Za’atari and Azraq camps. W is 17 and he is one of the 130 inmates detained at the Juvenile Detention Centre in Duhok, Iraq. He was sentenced to a 6 months detention after fighting with another student. Because many young people live in the centre, sports facilities and a library are available. Inmates follow classes and practice sports so that when they have served their sentences, they can return to their communities and contribute positively. "I always felt uncomfortable and ashamed to ask my father for money, as all my four siblings were students. My father was the only provider in the family.” Hunar, 24, was born and raised in the Khurmal district of Halabja Governorate, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Hunar is the eldest of five, three sisters and one brother. His mother is a housewife, and his father owns a small store for spare parts of vehicles.
Despite their limited financial means, the parents supported their children’s education. Hunar graduated from the University of Salahaddin in Erbil, in 2018.
