BEIRUT: As the Syria conflict continues to grind on, the European Commission Tuesday emphasized the need to prioritize access to higher education for refugees in Lebanon and across the region. “Syria, the region, the European Union and the whole world need highly educated, technically sound, self-confident and motivated people who are active members of their communities,” EU Ambassador to Lebanon Christina Lassen said on the first day of a two-day conference in Beirut Tuesday, according to a media statement. “For that, we need quality universities that can create an environment of trust, respect, and nondiscrimination, and higher education institutions that encourage cultural and religious diversity, and promote respect for the individual and personal freedom,” she added.
